Claude Marchalot est né le 26 mars 1948 à Quimper qu'il quitte pour Rennes, avec sa famille, en 1964. Les premières peintures, gouaches puis rapidement huiles, sont effectuées pendant ces années rennaises conclues en 1972 par l'obtention d'un DEA d'informatique et d'un AEA de géomorphologie des océans. Diverses peintures, de paysages, essentiellement, se succèdent : Rennes et sa campagne, les bords de Rance que l'exercice du monitorat de voile lui permet de découvrir...

En 1972, arrivée dans la région brestoise et découverte des paysages environnants puis mariage avec Marie, de Paimpol en 1975. Ils ont 3 enfants et 1 petit enfant. Paimpol et ses environs s'ajoutent aux motifs de prédilection. Sa vie professionnelle se déroule à l'Ifremer. Les peintures (huiles et aquarelles) sont alors épisodiques; les carnets de croquis faits à l'occasion de voyages et des croisières familiales s'accumulent sans être beaucoup exploités, sinon à l'occasion de la réalisation d'une ou deux huiles, chaque hiver.

En 2008, la fin des activités professionnelles sonne le retour de la peinture au premier plan.

Sur le plan artistique, ses références, en aquarelle au moins, pourraient se situer dans la ligne de l'école anglaise de l'aquarelle dite topographique (XVIII et XIXème siècle), faite d'effet de lumière, de lavis successif et transparents. Mais c'est une artiste américaine, Jeanne Dobie, Philadelphie, auteure du magistral Faire chanter la couleur, (éditions Bordas) qui lui apporte les fondements techniques, la palette de pigments purs et les couleurs lumineuses qui vibrent.
