Cristian Lapusan is a contemporary artist currently working in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. He received his BA and MA in painting at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca, he later pursued further education, earning himself a PhD in Visual Art from the University of Art and Design, Cluj-Napoca, in 2019.
Lapusan’s artistic approach unearths the deep emotional complexities that manifest in today’s contemporary age. He portrays physical bodies while subsequently depicting the wants, needs and desires of life, coalescing our corporeal reality with dreams and idolisations, creating powerful compositions that materialise our vulnerabilities and anxieties.
Lapusan’s work is intricate, characterised by detailed scenes and landscapes featuring realistic representations of figures and objects. The landscapes harbour atmospheric depth and poignant scenography while the anonymous figures symbolise a collective rather than an individual. Lapusan seeks to reveal personal narratives that resonate with all who view his work, unexplored dreams, aspirations, vulnerable contemplations of the past and the struggles of navigating our futures, all the themes that accurately encapsulate the essence of humanity.
Lapusan explains, “I guide the viewer to analyse and debate an extremely current, sensitive, and challenging theme through its vulnerability and at the same time its intrinsic reflexive character - the fragile and inseparable relationship between man and its nature”.
Cristian Lapusan has exhibited his work extensively in Romania and has garnered an international audience, exhibiting solo shows in the Netherlands, , the UK and the USA. He has also exhibited in group shows both in Romania as well as Europe and New York.
