Photographic artist Dorothy Gales'Eyes is an avid traveler who has traveled many miles on foot, by bike, and by car to explore the vast, barren landscapes of California.
Always carrying her camera slung over her shoulder, she realized that her hikes were constantly accompanied by the image of the small wooden cabin swept away by the hurricane in the movie "The Wizard of Oz." Dorothy Gales, protecting her faithful Toto in her arms and watching the world beneath her, became the central inspiration for her photographic project titled "The Look of Dorothy Gales."
The name of the fictional character came naturally to Dorothy, but another melody also resonated in her head during her walks: that of the famous television series "Little House on the Prairie", which evoked childhood memories and his first cinematic love. This series was for her the symbol of America, a landscape that she ended up discovering in the desert hills of California.
Dorothy thus captured these arid and majestic landscapes, populated by solitary cows, where nature and agriculture coexist in harmony, far from the crowds of tourists. She discovered a timeless world, preserved from time, where old barns stand like vestiges of the past, ready to collapse under the weight of the years and the elements.
These dilapidated barns, which seem on the verge of disappearing, moved Dorothy. They are an integral part of the landscape and history, sometimes welcoming cows in search of shade and rest. For some of them, their fate is sealed, condemned to renovation or demolition in the coming months.
Dorothy wanted to bear witness to these fleeting encounters with decaying structures, hanging on a fragile thread. His goal was to capture the essence of these lost places in the middle of nowhere in California, freezing their ephemeral beauty.
Additionally, Dorothy set her sights on cities that are dear to her, such as San Francisco and Portland. She explored the colorful and artistic streets of these cities, where each sticker, each graffiti, each advertising poster seems to be transformed into works of art.
Her photographic work pays homage to the neighborhoods of Portland that she particularly likes, while testifying to the upheavals caused by gentrification. Through her lens, she offers a look at a bygone time, a memory frozen in the immortality of the image.
