Artwork from Burning Man's annual gathering in Nevada's Black Rock Desert will be auctioned off and displayed at Sotheby's New York. The online charity auction, which runs through October 8, will benefit the participating artists as well as the Burning Man nonprofit, which has had to cancel its live events since 2019 due to budget cuts.

Sotheby's enlisted the help of Burning Man production designer David Korins, who also designed the hit "Immersive Van Gogh" exhibition in New York, to best communicate the Burning Man experience to the Sotheby's audience. According to Cook, "Burning Man is a cultural phenomenon." "Our community's work is of a very high and interesting level," says one member.
Instead of recreating the physical space, which is built from the ground up every year, Korins tried to capture the spirit of Burning Man's founding principles in the installation. Highlights include some of Burning Man's most iconic art floats and vehicles, like David Best's Rocket Car, one of the festival's most devoted artists. Cadillac Sedan DeVille, a 40-foot-long vehicle with 16 seats, is expected to sell for $50,000 or more.

Sotheby's auction will help sustain the gathering for years to come if it is a success. After a year off to reflect on sustainability and radical diversity and equity strategies, Cook declared, "We are confident that we'll make it through and be back in 2022 stronger than ever."
