Georges Dumas est un photographe plasticien français né en 1975. Il crée des œuvres qu’il appelle « paintographies », c’est-à-dire des œuvres en technique mixte sur toile qui mélangent photographie, composition numérique et peinture à l’acrylique. La figure humaine est le sujet principal de ces œuvres, avec une place importante accordée au nu et au drapé, dans le droit fil de la statuaire de l’Antiquité et de la Renaissance. Le croisement des techniques comme l’importance accordée aux matières minérales qui remplacent la chair des modèles font des paintographies des œuvres inclassables, à la fois classiques et contemporaines, familières et étranges, aux confins de la peinture, de la sculpture et de la photographie, dans une esthétique du figement et de la pétrification qui justifie qu’on puisse parler de sculpture virtuelle..
Il présente son travail en et en Europe depuis 2007 à travers des expositions personnelles et collectives en galerie, des foires (Fotofever, Art Up, Art Montpellier) et des salons (Maaris, Puls’Art, Figuration Critique, ArtCité, Solid’Art, etc.)
Avec 6 autres artistes, il fonde le mouvement Transfiguring en décembre 2014 et en est un des principaux animateurs. On lui doit le texte du livre publié en 2018 qui présente la démarche artistique du groupe ainsi que la plupart des textes dans les médias. Il donne régulièrement des conférences sur la place de Transfiguring au sein de la photographie contemporaine.
Après que son travail a été publié en novembre 2019 dans la revue Niepcebook, il a entamé une collaboration avec l’éditeur Corridor Eléphant en tant qu’auteur de textes sur d’autres artistes ; en décembre 2021 est parue chez ce même éditeur une monographie de 178 pages qui retrace ses 15 premières années de carrière artistique. Début 2022, une rétrospective de six semaines s’est tenue à la Chapelle Saint-Pry de Béthune.
Depuis cette grande exposition, Georges Dumas a réalisé une centaine d’œuvres sur toile, poursuivant son travail d’exploration des matières et de la figure humaine…
