Architecte de formation, Raphaël Lam intervient sur tous types de s papier, le plus souvent récupérés, détournés. Il utilise les pages de vieux livres sur le point d'être jetés, d'anciennes cartes géographiques, des reproductions issues de manuels scientifiques ou scolaires etc.
Partant de ces matériaux imprimés et jaunis, il coud et dessine des motifs qui s'entrecroisent, formant des constructions géométriques abstraites, rappelant parfois le motif vichy, parfois les lignes de perspective d'un dessin industriel. Jamais de colle dans ses œuvres, tout est maintenu grâce à des coutures minutieuses et des points de peinture ou de kraft judicieusement placés.
Raphaël apprécie de faire contraster dans son travail le géométrique et la couleur qu'il appose à des typographies tapuscrites, belles lettres, titres de chapitre et autre illustrations trouvées au hasard des pages qui lui tombent entre les doigts. Pour cela, ses outils de prédilection sont le fil et les aiguilles (un héritage de sa mère couturière) mais aussi les encres colorées et le brou de noix pour les touches de sépia.
