This painting was created during my art residency at Port Gallery in Barcelona in 2022, at the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The pain of that time was overwhelming, and all my thoughts were with my homeland. From this emotional storm, this artwork was born.
The central element is the ceramic rooster—a symbol of resilience after it miraculously survived in a ruined kitchen in Borodyanka, standing untouched on a cabinet amidst complete destruction. This humble object has become one of the iconic symbols of Ukrainian indomitability.
In Ukrainian folklore, the rooster—known as Budysvit—represents light, fire, and the triumph of good over evil. I interwove this symbol with traditional Ukrainian ornamental patterns, layering them across the body of the woman as a protective veil, a reminder of cultural continuity, care, and warmth.
This piece is a visual prayer for Ukraine, for strength, and for the enduring light within us.
