Victor Molev "Old Mazai and the Hares" 2024 45x61cm Oil on canvas.
In this painting by the Canadian artist and storyteller Viktor Molev, “Old Mazai and the Hares,” we see a free interpretation of the famous story by N. Nekrasov. This work of art differs from the original source, presenting the characters in a more prosperous and aristocratic light.
Red-bearded and with a sly look, Mazai is depicted as a wise savior, steering his boat among the spring floods of the rivers. His act is a symbol of hope and humanity, emphasizing the importance of caring for the weak and defenseless.
Seven hares sit in a boat, expressing rationality and calm. They are not just animals; they are presented as beings with individuality and dignity. Their clothing and mannerisms evoke the diversity of their characters and life stories.
This picture is not only a colorful illustration of the story, but also a deep philosophical treatise on the relationship between man and nature, on the eternal desire for salvation and harmony. Mazai and the hares, going through the ordeal together, become symbols of the universal desire for life, peace and mutual understanding.
This painting will be presented to the public for the first time at the Riverdale Artwalk (Toronto) on June 1 and 2.

Victor Molev is a contemporary award-winning Canadian artist. He is working in the styles of Decorative Realism, Fantasy, Symbolism and Surrealism. In the mid-1970s, as an aspiring young artist, he took drawing and painting lessons under the apprenticeship of Moscow sculptor Tatyana Vishnyakova. But it wasn’t until his early twenties that Molev became familiar with the works of Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Rene Magritte, M.C. Escher and Frank Frazetta through books and magazines. Molev was incredibly inspired by these artists which became like mentors to him.

After receiving an education in architecture, the artist worked in the field for ten years. He then worked as a set designer at the Pushkin Opera and Ballet Theater. Both of these jobs are still reflected in the creative processes of the artist. He has created his own unique and intuitive world of dreams and absurdity. His works are sincerely naive and kind.

Victor Molev was born in 1955, in Gorky, Russia. His works were exhibited all over the world, including the Art Museum of Saint-Frajou, . Molev has also participated in numerous international competitions of humorous drawing, and won numerous silver and bronze medals.

The Artist was highlighted in an article in ArtMajeur Magazine:
