I hadn’t planned to paint it, but once I saw it, there was no turning back.

The foundation of this painting was oiled charcoal—a forgotten technique of the old masters. Charcoal is soaked in oil overnight, and just before use, it only needs to be wiped off. Once dry, the oil acts like a varnish, sealing the drawing and giving it a unique depth.

I don’t mind the visible incompleteness of this painting—capturing the arrangement of the hands and décolletage was more important than striving for photographic accuracy in rendering light and shadow.

I grind paints for my artworks using historical recipes from masters like Rembrandt, da Vinci, and Vermeer. I source pigments from rare locations—ranging from geological expeditions to specialty shops. I thicken linseed oil under the sun according to a 14th-century recipe, which adds depth and durability to my paintings. Despite available technologies, I choose traditional methods to create pieces inspired by the heritage of past masters.
