The Elephant’s Morning Stretch (2025) 雕塑 由 Zhao Yongchang

In the sculpture The Elephant’s Morning Stretch, the young elephant stretches its body in an anthropomorphic manner. Its trunk rises high, and its limbs extend to the limit, as if embracing the dawn of a new day. Every line exudes a sense of leisurely comfort and vibrant vitality. The Chinese character "Shu" (舒), meaning "stretch", precisely captures this dynamic moment, freezing the elephant's freedom and energy in time. The interweaving of celeste and light orange on its body resembles the magnificent scene of the early morning sky merging with the rising sun. The term "Xuantun" (玄暾), originating from the Poems of Immortality by Guo Pu of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, originally describes the magnificent radiance of the rising sun, which perfectly echoes the colors of the work. Through the form and colors of the young elephant, the creator integrates the imagery of the sunrise from classical Chinese poetry, showcasing the ingenious collision between traditional and modern art. Moreover, it conveys the vigorous power and poetic beauty of life awakening. When viewers appreciate this work, they seem to be transported to a dawn with the first rays of light, feeling the beauty and hope of all things coming back to life.​
